Hey, white folks who were upset that Bey dressed her dancers as black panthers at the super bowl. I’ve got some news you might not like. It looks like the parents of three unarmed young black men who were killed by police in recent years will all be appearing in an upcoming Beyoncé video.

Oh lord, you’re foaming at the mouth now. Settle down, it’s gonna be alright. Christ, I am not looking forward to being there when you find out there is a character in the new Captain America movie named Black Panther. Hmm? Oh, nothing. Don’t worry about it.

What’s that? Yes, I’m sure Bey saw the angry Facebook posts that you composed during the second half of the game alleging that she was empathizing with terrorists. I’m sure she read them all and thought long and hard about them.

Yes, your memes were all scathing. All of them. Really. Bey probably showed them to Jay and then the two of them probably sat somberly in their $100 million penthouse and considered the effect that her disgusting display could have on impressionable youths.

But seriously, I like this. And not just because I’m terrified of upsetting the Beyhive. Doubling down on who you are is always the move. +30 to Mrs. Carter.

Damn, we’re coming up on the 2nd anniversary of Bobby Shmurda’s first (read: only) hit “Hot Nigga” already? That means we’re almost at the 1.5 year anniversary of his incarceration. Time flies.

Still in jail awaiting trial for numerous charges, up to and including attempted murder, Bobby has had bail denied time and time again. The newest development in this ongoing comes from Shmurda’s mother, who recently told XXL that while locked up, he has been working on a script detailing the origins of GS9, several other members of which are being held for trial as well.

Uhh, Bobby, that might now be the best idea.

Remember the last thing you wrote? That song that made you famous? Remember how, as we have previously discussed, the lyrics are like 75% incriminating evidence? Remember Mitch? Remember how he caught a body a week and almost two years ago? He’s being charged for that.

This seems like a half-assed scheme the DA might cook up in a CSI knockoff. He doesn’t have enough evidence to convict, so he has a typewriter left in Shmurda’s cell hoping that, if left alone long enough, his burning desire to write will produce some kind of court admissible evidence.

So Bobby, do you get what I’m saying? This script is probably not a great idea. At the very least you gotta throw in some leprechauns or something that you can point to like “See? This couldn’t have happened. There are leprechauns. Leprechauns aren’t real”

Hiphopdx – Chief Keef announced he was retired from the Rap game on Twitter Wednesday (March 2).
“I’m retired you didn’t know?” Sosa wrote in a tweet. “To many niggas sound jus like me or saying shit like almighty would.”
Well, I guess it’s like they say: when the going gets tough, the Keef get quitting (disclaimer: no one has ever said this). Between his existing legal problems, his dismissal from every label that he has been attached to, and his subpar sale things have not been easy for Keef in recent years. In fact, the highlight seems to have been when police showed up to attempt and arrest a hologram of him.

It seems lazy to blame this decision on too many rappers biting his style though. Like, you can’t compete with imitations of yourself? That’s like if Future just up and retired the second Desiigner dropped.

That’s why I have to give Keef a -5 for his retirement present. Sorry it’s not a gold watch, bro. Wish you the best, and we’ll always have “Don’t Like,”

Here’s lookin at you, Keef.

HipHopDX – A judge has ordered 50 Cent to appear in court after posting a series of photos of himself with loads of cash, according to CNN Money. The rapper filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in July.

Oh shit, I have been waiting for this. That sounds mad petty, but just understand that’s not how I mean it. See, rich people broke is different than you and me broke. When rich people file for bankruptcy it’s because they want to protect the boatload of money that they still have. When I file for bankruptcy it’s because student loan officers have started coming round my apartment with tire irons. It’s just different.

So when a rich person declares bankruptcy they actually do have money. In fact they probably still have a whole lot of money. But when Donald Trump declares bankruptcy you don’t see him wiping his ass with hundred dollar bills on IG. With rappers it’s different. The only things rappers like more than having money is letting you know they have money. Like the old saying goes: if Birdman makes bills in the forest and there’s no one around to watch him flex, did he even get paid?

And there’s nothing wrong with that. If you grew up with holes in ya zappatos, you’d celebrate the minute you be having dough. Unless of course there is a powerful government entity watching closely to make sure you’re not flaunting your expendable income. Then you have a problem. So I’ve been waiting to see which would prevail: 50’s common sense, or his desire to shine. Looks like we have a winner.

In conclusion: it is not always best to be fresh as hell if the Feds watchin.

This week during the Grammys, Top Dog CEO Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith took to Twitter to announce that rapper, and Black Hippy member, Jay Rock had been seriously injured when his motorcycle crashed. Shortly after it was announced that Jay’s injuries were not life threatening and, at the time of this writing, he has undergone surgery and is on the road to recovery. This brings us to the crux of this article:

Rappers, stop injuring yourselves on motorbikes.

Maybe this is a bit alarmist of me, but after Jay Rock’s recent injury and Fetty Wap’s similar misfortune last year I figured I should say something. As Sherlock Holmes may (or may not. I have no idea) have said: once is an event, twice is a pattern. Best to play it safe.

Fetty’s incident was unfortunate, but not unexpected. A guy with zero depth perception should probably not be driving a motorcycle in the first place. Jay’s came out of nowhere though. I had no idea he even had a bike. Who’s next? Meek is big on dirt bikes and he’s had a rough year, so my money is on him.

But anyways, let’s try to get this under control before it becomes a problem. The first time an album is delayed due to a motorcycle accident, I am suing the shit out of Harley Davidson.

“As the first woman to win Album of the Year at the Grammys twice, I want to say to all the young women out there: There are going to be people along the way who will try to undercut your success or try to take credit for your accomplishments or your fame”

That’s an excerpt from Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech after snatching the Best Album grand prize at last nights Grammy Awards. A clear reference to Kanye West’s “Famous” off of The Life Of Pablo. The song caused waves when it debuted last Thursday for the line “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex… I made that bitch famous,” instantly garnering accusations of misogyny.

So the first thing this tells us is that maybe Taylor didn’t actually approve the use of this line, as Yeezy previously claimed. Also, maybe he should think his Twitter rants through a little more before posting.

kanye, what’s up with you lately? The crazy late night tweets, theattack on Wiz, the Bill Cosby defense, only releasing your album on Tidal. It’s like you saw all the hate Martin Shrelki was getting and got jealous.

I’ll let others debate whether or not this was misogynist. To me it just seemed to be an indictment of Kanye’s ego more than anything else, but I just write jokes on the internet so what do I know? Honestly though, Taylor, I think it would have been more effective if you just took the stage, walked up to the mic, and verbatim told Kanye to go fuck himself. And then did the dirt-off-your-shoulder gesture. That last part is non-negotiable.

Last night’s Grammy awards went basically as everyone could have guessed on the rap front. Kendrick swept the rap awards, all but one of which were announced before the broadcast. He was played off when his Best Rap Album acceptance speech started running too long.

Apart from the early success of TPAB, the highlight of the show was Kendrick’s manic performance. Surrounded first by prison imagery, shackled to a chain gang, and then later by Afrocentric iconography, the Compton MC blazed through “The Blacker The Berry,” “Alright,” and a third untitled song while illuminated by pyrotechnics and blacklight.

Also on display, via a camera crew in New York, was a performance by the cast of the when-did-schoolhouse-rock-get-dope Broadway smash Hamilton. It was the kind of thing where I was half expecting them to try and teach me how a bill becomes a law at any second, but I didn’t mind. The rappers involved were talented, and creator Lin Manuel Miranda clearly has a true love of hip hop. This he made clear when he later rapped an acceptance speech for Best Musical Theater Album on behalf of the cast.

TPAB cleaned up in the rap-centric awards, but when it came to the general categories, K Dot came away notably empty handed. “Alright” lost Song Of The Year and Record Of The Year to Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud” and the Mark Ronson/Bruno Mars mega-hit “Uptown Funk,” The real snub came later in the night though. “Alright” was a great song, but To Pimp A Butterfly was never meant to stand as anything less than a full collection. As a complete work, it is worth way more than the sum of its parts. So when it lost Album Of The Year to Taylor Swift’s 1989, some eyebrows were raised.

So how do you win a Grammy? Kendrick made an epic, thought-provoking, artistic triumph about modern blackness in America. Taylor’s 1989 was a collection of unconnected radio hits, and it sold five times as many copies. From this it would appear that commercial success is what the Grammys are trying to gauge. But when the Carter III was up for the award, it lost to the Robert Plant/Allison Krauss collab Raising Sand that sold only a fraction of what Weezy’s masterpiece sold.

So what’s the answer? How much a Grammy really cost? I guess the answer is: whatever you’re going to pay for it. It’s worth as much as you let it be. And when it comes to Kendrick? I think he gon’ be alright.

complete list of winner can be found here.

In case you haven’t been paying attention to the ads on the sides of NYC bus stops, the Grammys are tonight. If this doesn’t make you excited, well that’s actually pretty understandable. This award show hasn’t been interesting for a while, but the dunk contest rebounded into something worth watching this weekend, so I’ll give the Grammys a chance to cook.

Tonight though, a rap album might actually take home Album of The Year. Kendrick Lamar’s unapologetically black To Pimp A Butterfly none the less. Some would say this is a big deal, since The National Academy Of Recording Arts And Sciences has a history of snubbing rap albums. Currently only Outkast’s Speakerbox/The Love Below and Lauryn’s Miseducation have taken home the grand prize. The only way they could be more disdainful would be if they held the Best Rap Album ceremony at the Red Lobster down the block from the theater.

But I digress. In honor of this we decided to take a look at the rap album category and break down the nominees lyrically. In this category we have:

Kendrick – To Pimp A Butterfly

Nicki Minaj – The Pinkprint

J. Cole – 2014 Forest Hills Drive

Dr. Dre – Compton

Drake – If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late

While going through this breakdown we will be looking only at verse (no hooks), and omitting featured artists. Without further ado, here are our findings:

Most Used Words – For this we’ve removed the obvious recurring words (“the,” “a,” “him/her,” “nigga,” etc) to get a better picture of what’s going on in these lyrics. Drake and Kendrick shared the same word, “Know,” with 64 and 71 uses respectively. Cole, dropped “Love” 49 times and Nicki used the related pair of “say” and “tell” 15 and 16 times. For Dre the most used word, with a count of 48, was “fuck.” Don’t ever change, Dre.

Cursing – While Kendrick, Dre, Drake, and Cole averaged 46 uses of “fuck” and 33 uses of “shit,” Nicki only came in with 16 and 5 of the two curses respectively. This can probably be attributed to her history of radio friendly singles. Basically, everyone else said “fuck” more because they gave less fucks.

Bitch Vs. Woman – The use of “bitch” in hip hop has been debated so long that most people have tuned it out by this point. We’re going to leave that argument up to Kanye and Taylor Swift’s brother and just bring you the facts. J. Cole’s Bitch-To-Woman ratio (BWR), which figures in the word “girl” as well, was 3.00. That means 3 uses of bitch to every use of woman. Nicki and Dre were in a similar state with BWRs of 3.25 and 3.33. Kendrick came in lower at 1.57, but it was Drake the stood out in this metric, with a remarkably low 0.13.

Stated Blackness – Across Cole, Drake, Nicki, and Dre’s albums, use of the word “black” averaged only 4 instances per album. With 16 uses on TPAB, Kendrick’s total was 4.5 times that. Makes sense for an album about the modern black experience in America.

What Happened To Gangsta Rap? – Of the five albums nominated, Kendrick’s was the only one on which any variation of the word “gang” appeared more than once, and there it only was used 5 times. References to guns were also low, averaging 3.4 uses per album. While there definitely has been a decline in gangsta rap in the post-Kanye era, we’d largely chalk this stat up to The Academy not being comfortable nominating a Vince Staples album.

A Sad Year For Ass – The word ass only averaged 2.6 appearances across these albums. “Shameful… Just shameful…” mutters Sir Mix-A-Lot from somewhere in the distance.

Total Vocab – When tallying up the total number of different word across each album we were unsurprised to find that Kendrick, with his ambitious content and complex rhyming, came in on top with nearly 1,983 different words. Cole came in a distant 2nd with 1,289 and Drake was hot on his heels at exactly 1,200. Nicki was a good deal below this at 836. Dre, with his simpler style more focused on intensity than lyricism, rounded out the bottom at 698.

Yesterday Kanye unveiled his new album, and clothing line at Madison Square Garden during his Yeezy Season 3 event and immediately proceeded to court controversy. In the newly debuted song “Famous” Kanye quips that “I feel like me and Taylor Swift might still have sex… I made that bitch famous”, a line that was immediately criticized by many as misogynistic.

Taylor’s brother Austin reacted via Instagram by posting a video of himself whistling as he throws out a pair of Yeezys. This post drew praise from several celebs was widely shared in support of T-Swizz.

Now, this is the first I’ve ever heard of Austin Swift, so I don’t really know anything about the guy, but I hope he likes sneakerheads digging through his trash. Cause he’s gonna get that for about a week.

The overall debate I’ll stay out of. What matters here is that Austin feels like Ye disrespected his sister. But dude, you bought the shoes. The money is already in Kanye’s pocket. You’re just throwing out your own sneakers at this point.

And for what those cost, I think you’re crazy. If Taylor is actually offended then yeah, maybe don’t wear them to family gatherings, but those is expensive. This is some rich people shit

But I don’t know, nice gesture I guess? You do you. I’m just saying that if MJ talked shit about my sister, she’d just have to deal with it cause I can’t afford to trash a pair of Jordans.

Then again, now you’ve got room on your shelf for the new Yeezys… Just sayin…

UPDATE: The melody that Austin is whistling in the video sounds suspiciously like this WWII British song about how Hitler only had one testicle.

This Sunday Beyonce appeared at the Super Bowl halftime show to perform her new single “Formation” and, in doing so, generated way more hype than the show’s headliner, Coldplay. The performance involved dancers dressed in uniforms reminiscent of the Black Panthers, and promptly pissed off every white person over 50.

But this article isn’t about that. It’s about what happened immediately before the show. According to US Weekly, in the hours before her performance, Beyonce received a delivery of ten thousand roses from her husband: a Mr. Sean Carter.

Jay. What the fuck.

You know that Valentines Day is coming up right? Every woman in America is expecting a gift from bae this coming Sunday and you have raised the bar way too goddamn high for the rest of us. You think anyone’s girl is gonna be satisfied with candy and a bouquet now? Guys all over the country are gonna be showing up with a dozen roses only to get hit with “Jay gave Bey literally 833 times this…”

So yeah, thanks for that, Hov. Now we all gotta shell out for skywriting or some shit. On V Day the sky above New York is gonna have so many chicks’ names in it that it’ll look like a baby name book. Hope you’re happy, Jay. Hope you’re happy.
